I visited the Discovery Centre this morning with my colleague Sue Davies who is Head of Learning and Audience Development for the Leeds Museums and Galleries Service...
The Discovery Centre is a unique museum resource centre and a state-of-the-art storage facility...Apparently, only 5% of Leeds Museums’ treasures can be displayed at any one time, many others are held in storage and the Discovery Centre gives visitors a behind-the- scenes look at over a million treasures. It's a simply amazing place and we met Dominique Attwood, the e-learning manager, who showed us their new materials. We also met Clare Brown, the Natural History Curator and Ben Lawrence, their new Assistant Curator of Biology, and Liz Knight, the Learning and Access Officer, who talked about the Centre and gave us a guided tour of this amazing facility. This included curiosities ranging from tiny bugs and butterflies to a hippo, bear and yak, from Roman pots to canoes, from jigsaws to clocks and even clothes, shoes, paintings and sculptures. Anyone is welcome to visit the Discovery Centre for research or to see these unique resources. You can call the Discovery Centre on 0113 214 1548 to arrange an appointment.
