"Appreciative words are the most powerful force for good on earth."
George W. Crane
It's strange that so many teams survive on the mixture of mistrust, antipathy and jealousy that permeates so many of our workplaces. I learned a long time ago that when it comes down to it it's the people that make an organisation, a company, a school or a family that matter and that that ordinary people empowered, loved and trusted can achieve extraordinary things. In terms of work, wherever I have been I have worked tirelessly to create a culture where colleagues feel valued and coached and supported and where high expectations drive brilliant outcomes. We should have learned by now that command and control simply produces defensive behaviours and delivers mediocre results. To release the magic requires trust, autonomy, respect and coaching and a few thank you notes on the way!
