It has been a deeply sad ending to another strange week...
A week where we saw the release of the latest PISA results; with politicians dishing out the blame and distancing themselves from any responsibility for the state of our schools. A week where we saw the strongest winds and tides in a generation causing havoc on the East coast. And sadly a week where we heard the news about Nelson Mandela dying. Nelson Mandela believed that 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world' and I have spent the last fifteen years of my career wrestling with the challenges facing our education system against a background of chronic underachievement, systemic failure and poor leadership. And as always, to keep me sane when the going gets tough, I have been re-reading the McKinsey reports which provide us with the keys to success if people could be bothered to read them, learn from them and act upon the messages they contain.
