I visited Westfield School in Sheffield again last night to attend the launch event for their 'Made in Sheffield' programme, which involves young people becoming ambassadors in five strands of the programme; engineering/advanced manufacturing, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, retail, sport, health and well-being and computer science.
The school was already working with us on two strands of 'Made in Sheffield', the computer science and retail strands, and they have now recruited groups to work on the engineering/advanced manufacturing, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and sport, health and well-being elements of the programme. David Grey MBE, the current Master Cutler, attended the event and talked to a massed hall of young people and their parents/carers about the history of the Cutlers' Company and his expectations of the ambassadors as representatives of the school, their employment sector and the Cutlers' Company.
The event last night involved presenting badges and certificates to all 134 ambassadors to recognise their success in being selected for the programmes. It was great to see the impact the 'Made in Sheffield' programme has already had at Westfield and how Andy Ireland, the headteacher, Gary Simmons, Deputy Headteacher and Mike Ward, Assistant Headteacher, all see the programme contributing in the future to the development of the school. Two of the schools' Year 11 Cutlers' Ambassadors, on the retail strand, talked confidently, positively and passionately about the impact of the 'Made in Sheffield' programme, and what they had learned through this brilliant initiative. They were simply wonderful adverts for the school, the programme and the Cutlers' Company.
