Over the last fifteen years I have worked with some simply extra-ordinary colleagues working in school improvement services across the country; talented, intelligent, committed and experienced people who brought a rigor and focus to their work and who had over this period achieved a remarkable transformation of the learning landscape and helped schools deliver some outstanding outcomes.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, I am struggling with the meltdown of local authority school improvement services across the country as the cuts bite and Academies and Free Schools become the preferred answer to life, the universe and everything. I am somewhat confused about who will provide the local strategic leadership, the local challenge and support and the local accountability in an academised world; a world fragmented and strangely connected to national and regional networks of supposedly strong and successful schools and sponsors who have little in common with the communities they apparently serve. Let me know if you have resolved this!
