CULTURE MATTERS!

Watching and reading horror stories about how we treat people with disabilities, people who are in hospital, people who are in care and young people in schools makes you realize that it isn't simply about standards but fundamentally the problem is about culture.
How do we create a work place culture in these places where care, dignity, respect, tolerance and understanding drive the way we do things. Throughout my life people have told me that things are impossible but I simply don't accept any of this. I passionately believe that every hospital can become a great hospital, every care home can become a great care home, every school can be a great school and that we can create great teams doing the extraordinary with the current people. Success doesn't come in can'ts it comes in cans. We simply need to change the culture and get people to believe; to believe in themselves and to believe in our elderly, our disabled, our children and young people and our colleagues. No one can doubt that the landscape has been transformed over the last fifteen years. Great colleagues working together have done it through the powerful use of a collaborative approaches and through using some brilliant programmes and if only one can do it and achieve real excellence they all surely can.  Importantly in the best hospitals, the best care homes and the best schools a culture of excellence has developed built on passion, persistence, self-belief and determined, focused and deliberate practice and hard work.
