TOO YOUNG TO FAIL!

"In Britain today, one of the richest countries in the world, very young children still fall behind and stay behind at school. Children born poor in the UK have often failed at the beginning of primary school. Save the Children reveal in this report that a seven-year-old from a poor family has their GCSE results all but set. Seven is just the beginning of education but it is almost too late for a fair chance in life for too many children.

During this period, where resources are under increasing pressure, we need to create a framework and pathway through learning for all our young people that will equip them with the skills they need to enter, thrive and succeed in the world of work. We all know that businesses and schools working in partnership can have substantial benefits for everybody involved and most importantly young people can gain awareness and experience of the workplace. In Sheffield, in common with the rest of the country, businesses continue to identify the problems they face recruiting young people with the skills and attitudes they need.

‘THE FORGOTTEN HALF’

In their report ‘The Forgotten Half’, produced for The Private Equity Foundation, Demos outlined a series of recommendations to the Coalition Government to help young people; focusing on the employability skills, character, literacy and numeracy they need to succeed in work and life; giving them the support they need to stay on track and the experience of the world of work alongside mentoring.

‘BUILDING THE WORLD OF WORK TOGETHER’

In their report ‘Business and schools: Building the world of work together’ published in 2012, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills reinforces the findings of previous research into this area. The report identifies the enormous amount of good practice where businesses and schools are working in partnership and highlights the different types of activities, which businesses and schools are doing to build the world of work into the school curriculum. We all know that businesses and schools all over the country are working together to provide young people with a greater awareness and understanding of the world of work, including the opportunities to access the experience of work that businesses are looking for when recruiting.

DAVID PRICE'S 'OPEN: How We'll Work, Live & Learn In The Future'

Nobody writes books about learning to make money -  but I’ve spent my whole adult life trying to help people through better learning, and I’d just like to get the book to as many people as possible.

Throughout my career, people have told me that things are impossible and that you can't do things because of the culture, the community, the poverty, the families or the people themselves. 

They say it has always been like that or that things are too resistant to change. However, experience has taught me that nothing is impossible and that with passion, persistence, determination, coaching, practice and hard work all things are possible... if you believe!!

NOTES TO THE HURRYING MAN!

I struggle to understand why everyone is in such a hurry all the time. We all constantly rush from one appointment to another place with little regard or care for anyone else; jumping traffic lights, ignoring the needs of others and pushing past people without looking or caring. I don't understand why it is but it appears that no-one seems to have any time or patience anymore and I was reminded of this wonderful poem by Brian Patten, one of the Liverpool poets.

I suppose I have been a critical, reflective learner all my life. All the best colleagues reflect on the quality of their work. They do this as professionals who are responsible for the quality of their work and for the achievements and personal and social development of the young people they teach, and as members of the team, which is responsible for the overall quality of educational provision.
