I have visited some great schools recently, and having spent the last twenty years learning about learning I know what it takes to build brilliant. And the great news is that it's alive and well and it's not rocket science...

The toolkits and the research evidence for what works are there. The keys are:
  • people make the difference;
  • learning leadership matters;
  • enthusiasm is contagious;
  • small is beautiful;
  • relationships are key;
  • it's a passionate enterprise;
  • coaching counts;
  • accountability can be intelligent;
  • systems can be beautiful;
  • training, support and learning are vital; and
  • persistence, determination and hard work move mountains.
Over many, many years I've also learnt that you also tend to get what you expect. This job we do is too important for any of us to be ordinary. So...

  • Stay away from negative people!
  • Expect outstanding!
  • Demand extraordinary!
  • Reject those who tell you it's impossible!

We must work with all our colleagues to help them strive each and every day to be extrordinary, to be outstanding, to be brilliant.
