GREAT SCHOOLS: St Batholomew's CE Primary School!

I was reminded, how could I forget, about the brilliant work going on at St Bartholomew's CE Primary School in Leeds by a message I received from Open Futures...

Open Futures is a skills and enquiry-based curriculum development programme, linking learning and life. The programme is funded by the Helen Hamlyn Trust and was developed to help children discover and develop practical skills, personal interests and values.
Open Futures provides a way of meeting the needs of primary school children, with enquiry ibeing fostered and nurtured through the programme’s four curriculum strands – askit, growit, cookit and filmit. Open Futures has been demonstrating its potential in pilot schools across the country, one of them being St Bartholomew's CE Primary School. The Open Futures website showcases the work at the school...

"St Bartholomew’s is an inner-city primary school serving a culturally and socio-economically diverse community, which is also a focus for support for health-related concerns. The school has no green spaces within its immediate environment. An outsider to a school such as St Bartholomew’s might feel it would be a tall order to grow anything, given that, at first glance, there doesn’t seem to be a single blade of grass. This didn’t phase the school’s teachers, who knew that with the help and support of the Royal Horticultural Society they could develop an attractive kitchen garden and that growit could be a focus for pupils becoming directly involved in developing the school site."

The next phase of this brilliant programme is in the process of being launched, aiming to give more and more children access to this exciting style of learning. Find out more at the Open Futures website at www.openfutures.com/about-open-futures.
