GREAT SCHOOLS: Little London Community Primary School

I was thinking about great schools again, how we develop ownership, responsibility and empowerment and engage powerfully with the communities we serve and I remembered Little London Community Primary School...

This is another little school that is doing something extraordinary at the heart of the Little London community.
The learning environment is brilliant, the children are wonderful, the school colleagues are fantastic and Jill Wood, the headteacher, is just extraordinary! I particularly remember the Little London Primary School Lantern Festival. I had been invited by Sue Knights, chair of governors, and Jill Wood, headteacher, to the school for their third lantern festival where children and their families and the team at the school carry their lanterns around the streets of Little London. It was wonderful to see so many families and friends gathering together to carry their home made and spectacular lanterns and to share and celebrate the magic of Little London Primary School. This was me at the festival...

It was a simple amazing gathering of this rich multicultural community and it was amazing to look back and see the string of multiculoured lanterns lights stretched around the streets and alleyways of Little London. Another thing I remember is their wonderful 'learn to learn' initiative which targets a small group of children who are struggling in their primary schools and over two terms the programme aims to get them back into learning through a very focused curriculum and intensive support. I have fantastic memories of talking to some of the children in the 'learn to learn' setting and to see the impact it is having. This is another great little school working at the heart of the Little London community. A place where Gill and her team are releasing an extraordinary magic!
